Chiropractic Care for Shoulder Pain: Can It Help?

Table of Contents

When someone comes in with shoulder pain, they’ve usually been round the houses. They’ve tried the painkillers, the stretches, the massage, the ice and heat, perhaps a new desk set-up, and yet the shoulder keeps niggling. It can feel like the shoulder is the problem, so why isn’t treating the shoulder fixing it?
At Roots Chiropractic in Horsham, we don’t treat shoulder pain. What we do is look at the system that runs the shoulder, and that starts a lot closer to your neck than most people expect.

The shoulder doesn’t work alone

Your shoulder is one of the most mobile joints in the body. It’s also one of the most dependent. Every muscle around it takes its instructions from the nervous system, and those instructions leave the spinal cord through the lower neck and upper back. The nerves that supply the shoulder, arm and hand come together as a network called the brachial plexus, which exits the spine at roughly C5 to T1. The muscles that stabilise the shoulder blade, lift the arm and keep the joint centred all rely on clear signals travelling along those pathways.Think of a lamp that won’t switch on. You could keep replacing the bulb, but if the plug isn’t properly in the wall, a new bulb won’t make any difference. The shoulder is the bulb. The spine and nervous system are the plug.

How the neck and upper back influence shoulder movement

Good shoulder movement is really a team effort. The shoulder blade, collarbone, ribcage, upper back and neck all need to move well together so that the arm can lift smoothly. When part of that chain isn’t coordinating, the shoulder is often asked to make up the difference.
Here are some of the ways the neuro-spinal system may be involved:

  • Muscle tone and coordination. When the nervous system’s picture of where the body is in
space becomes unclear, muscle activation can become uneven. Some muscles overwork while
    others switch off.
  • Protective tension. If the nervous system senses instability, particularly around the upper neck,
it may increase tone in the muscles around the neck and tops of the shoulders as a protective
    response.
  • Posture and head position. Sustained forward head positions (think laptops, phones and long
drives) change how load is shared between the neck, upper back and shoulder.
  • Upper back and ribcage movement. The shoulder blade sits on the ribcage. If the upper back
and ribs aren’t moving well, the shoulder has less to work with.
Stability → Clear signal → Coordinated muscles → Smooth movement

When that chain is disrupted, people often notice:

  • Shoulder or upper trapezius tension that returns after massage
  • Pain or stiffness lifting the arm overhead
  • Discomfort that travels between the neck, shoulder blade and arm
  • A shoulder that feels “weak”, “sticky” or unreliable
  • Tension that worsens with stress, desk work or poor sleep

Why local approaches sometimes don’t hold

There is nothing wrong with massage, stretching or exercise. They can be helpful, and many people feel better for them. But if the underlying driver is how the nervous system is regulating movement and muscle tone, working only at the shoulder can bring temporary change that doesn’t last. That’s often when people start wondering what they’ve missed.

What chiropractic care looks at

Chiropractic care focuses on the function of the spine and nervous system. Our aim is to support clear communication between the brain and the body, so that muscles can coordinate and move as they’re designed to. When people receive care, many report that their shoulder feels freer, lighter or less guarded. That’snot because we’ve treated the shoulder. It’s usually because the system that organises it is functioning better.

Our assessment at Roots

Our process is detailed and specific. We listen to your story, including previous injuries, accidents,
repetitive habits and stress, because all of these shape how your nervous system is currently adapting.

Global Tonal Assessment: how muscle tone is organised across the whole body, not just the
sore area

  • Integrated Specific Spinal Assessment: how the individual regions of the spine are functioning
  • Objective nervous system scans (Insight Scans, including HRV, thermography and sEMG): so
we can track your nervous system’s response over time
  • Global Tonal Assessment: how muscle tone is organised across the whole body, not just the
  • sore area

Frequently asked questions

Can chiropractic help shoulder pain?
Many people with shoulder pain seek chiropractic care, and practice members often report changes in how their shoulder feels and moves. We don’t diagnose or treat shoulder conditions. We work to improve spinal and nervous system function, which supports the coordination of the muscles around the shoulder.
Why would a chiropractor look at my neck if my shoulder hurts?

Because the nerves that supply the shoulder and arm leave the spine through the lower neck and upper
back, and because the neck, upper back and shoulder work together as one movement system.

How do I know if chiropractic is right for me?

Book a consultation. We’ll listen to your story, carry out a thorough assessment and tell you honestly whether we can help. If you’d be better served elsewhere, we’ll say so.

When should I see my GP instead?

If your shoulder pain follows a significant injury, comes with chest pain, breathlessness, fever, or new numbness or weakness in the arm, seek medical advice promptly.

The bigger picture

At Roots, we respect that your body is capable of regulating, adapting and healing when it’s functioning as it should. Pain isn’t the enemy. It’s feedback, and our job is to help you understand that message and support your body’s own ability to respond. If shoulder discomfort has been limiting your life, and you’re curious whether your nervous system could be part of the picture, we’d love to explore that with you. Book a consultation at Roots Chiropractic in Horsham. I hope this was useful. Every person, from newborn to senior, deserves to live with a well-functioning nervous system, and I’d love to be part of making that normal. Please reach out if you have any questions.

Kindest,

Morgan
