If you’re living with pain, you’ve probably already tried quite a lot. Painkillers, general movement and exercise, a new chair, a new mattress, a new desk, or simply stopping certain activities. Some things may have helped a little, but nothing has quite got to the bottom of it. Naturally, you end up asking: what’s actually going on?
At Roots Chiropractic in Horsham, we take a different approach to chiropractic care for pain relief. We don’t treat pain or medical conditions. Instead, we look at the system that produces and regulates the experience of pain: the nervous system, and the spine that houses it.
Pain is feedback, not the enemy
Pain isn’t simply a signal from a damaged part. It’s an output of the nervous system. Your brain weighs up everything it’s receiving: from your joints and muscles, from your senses, from your internal organs and from your stress levels. Based on that, it decides whether something needs protecting.
When the information is clear and the system is coping, you’re often not aware of much at all. When the information is unclear, or the system is under more load than it can adapt to, the brain can turn up the protective response. That can show up as pain, tightness, fatigue or stiffness
Unclear signal → Protective response → Pain, tension or restriction
That’s why the sore spot isn’t always where the issue sits, and why working only on the sore spot can bring changes that don’t last.
How the spine fits in
Your spine is the main route for communication between your brain and body. The joints and muscles
of the spine, particularly in the upper neck, send a huge amount of information to the brain about
position and movement. The spinal cord carries commands back out to the rest of the body.
If particular segments aren’t moving or coordinating well, the quality of that two-way traffic can suffer.
Chiropractic care aims to improve spinal function so the nervous system receives clearer information
and can regulate itself more effectively.
What kinds of experiences do people come in with?
People walk through our door with a wide range of experiences, including:
- Back, neck and shoulder tension that keeps returning
- Headaches and a feeling of pressure in the head
- Stiffness and discomfort after long periods of sitting or driving
- Aches and pains that seem to be worse with stress or poor sleep
- A general feeling that their body isn’t working as smoothly as it used to
We don’t treat any of these as conditions. We look at what your nervous system has experienced, and
where its ability to adapt has been outstripped.

Why it varies from person to person
Two people can have the same sore spot for very different reasons. Past injuries, accidents, repetitive habits, emotional stress, nutrition and sleep all shape how the nervous system is coping. Small habits repeated over years can shape nervous system tone just as powerfully as one big event.
This is why a thorough assessment matters so much, and why we don’t offer one-size-fits-all answers.
What chiropractic care involves at Roots
- We listen. We take time to understand your story, not just your symptoms.
- We assess the whole system. Our process includes a Global Tonal Assessment, an Integrated Specific
- Spinal Assessment and objective nervous system scans (Insight Scans including HRV, thermography and
sEMG). - We make specific adjustments. These are precise and gentle, aimed at improving how particular
segments of the spine move and communicate. - We track your progress. Because we measure change over time, you can see what’s happening, not just
how you feel on the day.
What do practice members report?
Many practice members tell us they feel more mobile, less tense and more at ease in their body, and that their discomfort becomes less intense or less frequent. We see this as a by-product of better nervous system function, rather than something we’ve treated.
